(Fort Worth, Texas) — The Academy of Western Artists (AWA) embraces a wide range of all things western, including singers, poets, authors and those in the western trades of saddle making, boot making, braiding, bit and spur makers and cartoonists, as well as the person considered the backbone on those long cattle drives of the 1800’s, the chuck wagon cook.

The AWA will honor those men and women this Thursday, March 14, at its 23rdannual Will Rogers Awards show at the Brown Lupton Ballroom on the campus of Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas.

“I’m very excited to be nominated alongside phenomenal talent in my genre, and even more excited to get to see everyone and watch each other get recognized,” says Kristyn Harris, who was a contestant on last year’s “American Idol.” She is nominated for Western Music Female Vocalist at this year’s awards show. “I’m very grateful!”

Doug Figgs, who is nominated for Western Music Male Vocalist, says, “I definitely consider it an honor to be among the nominees for Western Music Male Vocalist, especially considering the talent of the other nominees. I very much appreciate the recognition that comes with a nomination like this!”

Joni Harms received three nods this year, for Female Western Artist, Western Album for “Lucky 13” and Western Music Song for “Horse Sense.”

“What an honor to be nominated for three AWA awards this year,” Harms says. “Truth is … with or without awards, I would continue to write songs and play music. It is a gift God gave me and I am so blessed to be able to do something I love each day. I wish the best to all the nominees … everyone is a winner.”

Doug Figgs

This is the only awards show that presents awards in multiple genres of music, as well as awards to artisans who are a part of the western culture that the singers and songwriters write and sing about.
